Community Level Resources for Cardiovascular Health: Measurement & Utilization

The CDC is presently funding 25 state level cardiovascular health programs. A principle objective of these programs is to increase the level of resources and opportunities for people to lead healthy lives. This calls for programs to target attributes of the communities for modification. Because this is a relatively new area of surveillance and evaluation, it is necessary to design new instruments for data collection. A number of programs have established systems to measure community level resources in specific community settings and sectors. This session will present some of the more successful efforts to measure community level indicators and assess them for program planning, needs assessment and program outcomes.
See individual abstracts for presenting author's disclosure statement.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session participants will, 1) be familiar with the use of shelf surveys in food stores as a method for assessing the availability of low-fat foods and the impact of public health nutrition campaigns, 2) know how to create and utilize a simple computerized method of monitoring community level programs, as well as techniques to analyze the data collected, 3) understand an approach to inventory worksite resources that support a heart healthy lifestyle for the purposes of program planning, evaluation and for statewide surveillance, 4) have increased knowledge of successes and challenges in conducting community assessments for physical activity, nutrition and tobacco through partnerships, 5) will understand how secondary transportation data were obtained and analyzed, and how they could potentially be applied in their state as a community level indicator of local commitment to walking and bicycling, 6) be familiar with a community-based process for assessing community perception of policy and environmental conditions and facilitating change.
