Abstract #31155

Measuring worksite attributes that support employee heart healthy lifestyle opportunities

Brian Fisher, PhD, Bureau of Chronic Disease Epidemiology and Surveillance, New York State Department of Health, Room 565, Corning Tower, ESP, Albany, NY 12237-0679, 518-473-0673, bdf01@health.state.ny.us

Beginning in 1995 the New York State Healthy Heart Program (NYS/HHP) has been conducting worksite wellness programs that emphasize increasing the opportunities available in the work setting for employees to live heart healthy lifestyles. An assessment of worksite facilities, practices, and policies are measured at before, during and after interventions occur. Before being offered an opportunity to participate in the program, most recent cohort of worksites targeted by the NYS/HHP, were assessed and ranked on their need for such interventions, as well as their readiness. Experience with these measures has guided the New York State Department of Health in its development of a statewide surveillance effort on a subset of worksite-based attributes that support heart healthy lifestyles. This presentation will share the process of designing and implementing these worksite assessments. It will also review analysis planned and accomplished on the relationship between worksite-based opportunities and the behaviors they are assumed to support.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, participants will understand an approach to inventory worksite resources that support a heart healthy lifestyle for the purposes of program planning, evaluation and for statewide surveillance.
