Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview: A wide range of factors impact population health, and many of them are social in nature such as the social environment, e.g. education, discrimination, income, gender, and support structures that impact daily interpersonal interactions and the physical environment, e.g. housing, planning, transportation, and economic development which affect how and where people live. The agencies and organizations engaged in work involving these “social determinants of health” are a diverse group ranging from health departments to clinical facilities, non-government organizations, and consulting groups to policy think-tanks, planning departments, and tech start-ups. Working collaboratively, a blend of organizations can have a positive impact on population health outcomes. Public health professionals are the glue. Capable of quantifying problems, identifying risk factors and partners, and connecting dots between the issues and innovative solutions, the public health professional is critical to any population health oriented venture. In order to do this, public health professionals need to be equipped with “hard skills” such as epidemiology, health education, and policy analysis, and the “soft skills” such as leadership, communication, and effective networking to enable them as emotionally intelligent leaders who can assess collaborative opportunities and implement partnership-based programs efficiently. Using case studies that highlight the effectiveness of interdisciplinary / social determinant approaches to population health, this Learning Institute (LI) will introduce participants to tools they can use to become fully engaged in the increasingly diverse opportunities that exist for public health professionals. By identifying their strengths as leaders, facilitating their development as networkers and collaborators, the course will enable them with a range of non-technical skills used to communicate, create buy-in, and establish lasting connections.

Session Objectives: describe developments in social determinant collaborations that they can used as examples for similar projects in their current / future work, analyze their personal “soft skill strengths”
