Mapping the landscape of equity and system change in cancer care: The ACCURE project

Although White Americans are diagnosed with breast and lung cancer at higher rates, a larger proportion of African Americans die from these diseases. A 5-year study is underway in Greensboro, NC and Pittsburgh, PA to: (a) map race-specific treatment outcomes at 2 cancer centers and (b) determine if technology, training, and other tools can enhance equity in completion and standards of care received by African American and White early stage breast and lung cancer patients. ACCURE (Accountability for Cancer Care through Undoing Racism and Equity) is taking a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach so that the findings will be relevant to cancer centers and the communities they serve. Few cancer health disparity interventions involve Health Information Technology, and none, to our knowledge, has engaged anti-racism training organizations in collaborating with physicians and nurse navigators to effect system change. If shown effective, ACCURE’s system-level intervention has the potential to help resolve disparities in cancer and other chronic illnesses along the lines of Rapid Quality Reporting, Meaningful Use of Data, and Anti-Racism Training to create sustainable change within 1500 cancer centers affecting 1.4 million patients annually.
Session Objectives: 1. Present findings and research products from ACCURE’s first 2 years (electronic real-time registry, clinical performance reports, specially-trained Physician Champion and Nurse Navigator, and Healthcare Equity Training for cancer center staff). 2. Articulate ethical and institutional considerations raised by CBPR partners about the concepts of “transparency” and “accountability” as determinants of health equity. 3. Engage the audience in a feedback exchange of lessons learned about combining guiding principles, products, and evidence that reflect the truths of both community and science.
