| Too few nurses are caring for too many patients in our nation's hospitals, and patients are suffering the consequences. A growing body of evidence confirms that inadequate staffing is leading to tens of thousands of preventable injuries, infections, and deaths in hospitals each year. Meanwhile, insufficient public health nurses mean that many health needs go unmet in the community. The nurse staffing crisis is compounded by the shortage of faculty in nursing schools. Qualified applicants are being turned away. Now, more than ever, U.S. employers are looking overseas for nurses which drains health care personnel from countries with more limited resources and health care personnel, and jeopardizes the well-being of their citizens. In addition, extensive use of guest worker programs frequently depresses wages and guest workers themselves are particularly open to exploitation. This session will examine all these aspects of the nurse staffing crisis. | |||
| Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to: 1) Describe and discuss the effects of the nurse staffing crisis in hospitals, including increased patient injury, infection, and mortality, and nurse burnout and job dissatisfaction. 2) Understand and be able to discuss the role of public health nurses in providing access to health services in the community and the public health needs that are going unmet because of insufficient staffing. 3) Describe and discuss the implications of the U.S. nurse staffing crisis for developing countries and the way that overseas recruitment drains lead nursing personnel from countries with more limited resources and health care personnel. | |||
