This presentation will address the changing demographics and economic factors that directly impact the nursing shortage and, as a result, nurse education. The discussion will focus on the dwindling pool of available nursing faculty, as well as their preparation and expectations. The challenges confronting nurse educators will be discussed, since these are a deterrent to many current or potential long-term faculty members.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the presentation, the participant will be able to

• Discuss the variables in academia that are impacting the nursing shortage.
• Describe the necessary preparation for nurse educators.
• Describe the impact of the changing demographics of the nurse work force on nursing education.
