| America's worsening health care crisis is one of the most serious problems facing working people and their unions, and a comprehensive solution to this crisis is unlikely without active participation by, and support from, the labor movement. This session will explore the dimensions of the health care crisis as it affects working Americans and their unions -- including the burden that the crisis is placing on collective bargaining and the international competitiveness of U.S. industries, and the "race to the bottoom" that is being led by large, non-union employers such as Wal-Mart. It will also examine the history, evolution, and diversity of labor union views on national health care policy, and the prospects for -- and potential impact on -- the national debate about unifed labor support for comprehensive reform. | |||
| Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1) Understand and discuss labor's view of access to health care. 2) The role of the labor movement in securing the enactment of Medicare and Medicaid. 3) Recognize and Discuss the role of organized labor in the campaign for universal health insurance. 4) Analyze and discuss recent trends affecting the U.S. system of employment-based health coverage and labor's response to those trends. 5) Assess and discuss the legacy cost health care issue as it affects American manufacturing. 6) Discuss how the rise in health care costs has become a significant factor in collective bargaining negotiations. 7) Describe and discuss the problems women and children are experiencing under the current U.S. health care system. 8) Describe and discuss the mission and objectives of the Coalition of Labor Union Women, including its public health agenda. | |||
