The epidemic of diabetes is on the rise. It is estimated that at least 135 million people worldwide have diagnosed diabetes. These numbers continue to grow. In 1999 diabetes in the US increased about six percent. The diabetes cases are rising among every demographic category. In order to prevent diabetes-related complications and to improve the quality of life for persons with diabetes, we need to be prepared to provide quality care. It is crucial that we are able to describe the burden of diabetes in terms of person, place and time. This session will help us understand the magnitude of the epidemic; the cost related issues and the issues faced by special populations. | ||||
