The internet and other personal computer based applications are widely accepted as the new frontier in health information communications. For example, the January 2000 release of the Healthy People 2010 Objectives for Substance Abuse and other subject areas was web cast live and Secretary Donna Shalala of the Department of Health and Human Services stood on a paper version of the 1700 page document (cost $20), and displayed a CD ROM with the same contents (cost $2) and announced the first Department of Health and Human Services release of a CD ROM and web publication. Another example of the impact of the web on service delivery is the growth to 10,000 internet orders per month (30% of the total) to the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information. What do customers think about our web and CD ROM services? Do they supplant, expand or duplicate ATOD prevention and treatment information strategies? What are the costs and savings of using the internet as an information distribution system? What strategies are required in the internet world of information dissemination such as advertising, product appearance, timeliness, and shelf life? Federal restrictions on respondent burden in surveys require design specifications that permit sampling of web site "visitors" with "pop up" questionairres strategically spaced to achieve representativeness and conserve respondent burden. This session presents 1. Design and implementation of health services research into internet substance abuse prevention and treatment services, 2. Operating experiences from internet based substance abuse information systems, and 3. Future directions for internet based substance abuse initiatives | ||||
