The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention promotes the dissemination of substance abuse information through its National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information. In order to reach new audiences and benefit from the economy of the internet, the Center set up the Clearinghouse web site as one of the first major substance abuse prevention resources on the internet. Its site, www.health.org, now receives over six million hits representing about 350,000 visitors per month. The goals established for the Clearinghouse web site include content expansion, marketing, ease of access and navigation, and timeliness. In addition to describing methods for quantifying and evaluating these goals, a description of the evaluation objectives and how they are developed is presented. For example, to what extent does web site access to information serve the same customers as previously served? What are the characteristics of the web customer and what substance abuse prevention information needs are not being met for the web customer?
