Targeting a Leading Cause of Death: Strategies for Addressing the Neglect of COPD in Public Health Practice

The purpose of this session is to heighten the awareness of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) issues, especially in light of the APHA meeting theme, “Health in All Policies.” The primary objective of the four presentations is to communicate to the public health community about COPD, the third leading cause of death in the U.S. Presentations will address COPD issues from data, patient, environmental health, and policy perspectives.
Session Objectives: Describe the public health burden of COPD as a leading cause of death and disability, using population-based data. Discuss two programs that involve patient-focused and environmental health approaches in addressing COPD issues. Identify one priority need and one key gap in public health policy issues related to COPD.
