Development of a Chinese Version of the Postpartum Women Health Quotient Scale

Health Quotient (HQ) is a simple health screening tool. The authors of this study have developed a Postpartum Women Health Quotient Scale (PWHQS) for measuring five HQ subscales: health consciousness, knowledge on both maternal health and infant health, and ability of maintaining both maternal and infant health among Chinese postpartum women. Semi-structured interviews and two rounds of Delphi expert consultation were conducted to construct the original 42 items of PWHQS. A total of 395 puerperal women were recruited for interview from two inpatient clinics in Jiangsu Province, China. To assess the factorial structure of the PWHQS, we first used exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to examine the underlying factorial structure without imposing a preconceived structure on the items. Based on the results of EFA, 31 items were selected to confirm the factorial structure using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). While both five-factor CFA model and bifactor model fit data very well, bifactor model is preferred because it fit data better and identified a meaningful general HQ factor in addition to the five domain-specific factors. Our findings provide evidence that the PWHQAS can be readily applied to measure health quotient of postpartum women in China.
