The ACA and Philanthropy: Strategies to Support Implementation

142nd APHA Annual Meeting and Exposition (November 15 - November 19, 2014): http://www.apha.org/events-and-meetings/annual
Monday, November 17, 2014: 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
Panel Discussion
The state-by-state implementation of the Patient Accountability and Affordable Care Act (ACA) has been complex and continues to unfold. Many philanthropic organizations have recognized the roles they play in this process, from helping to develop implementation plans and processes, advocating for fair and accountable options, and supporting the agencies that implement the reforms. Local and regional philanthropies, especially those with strong community ties, are a key resource to address the variations in implementation from one community to the next and from state to state. They are also well positioned to ensure that the subtleties and nuances of the legislation are fully realized for maximum impact on the health of their populations. The proposed session will discuss philanthropic strategies used to support the implementation of the ACA and the success of these strategies. While national efforts of large foundations are well documented, this session will highlight the initiatives of regional, state, and local philanthropies to support the implementation of the ACA.
Session Objectives: 1. Attendees will be able to list ACA support strategies initiated/supported by Foundations. 2. Attendees will be able to explain philanthropy’s unique role in supporting ACA implementation.
