In 2013, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation funded the New Orleans Kids Partnership (NOKP) as the lead of one of 12 collaboratives to plan and implement obesity reduction projects across the state. NOKP developed a community health behavior change program named, “Grow Resources where ya At" (GRoW). GRoW targets youth and families in three adjoining zip codes in one New Orleans neighborhood based upon an ecological model of health behavior change. Major GRoW partners include three elementary schools, a group of community based organizations that have a history of doing collective work and which provide health-based programming (4-H, Young Audiences, the Public Library, Hands on New Orleans, Up 2 Us, (part of AmeriCorps), and the Louisiana Public Health Institute which administers a coordinated school health program in the schools.

A significant component of the evaluation is the administration of a baseline survey to 4th-8th graders who attend Saturday GRoW activities, in addition to all students who attend the three targeted public charter schools. The survey, developed in conjunction with Pennington Biomedical measures attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors related to dietary choices, physical activity, and social support.

This presentation will focus on an analysis of the baseline data (n>500). These results will provide a rare snapshot of what inner city students think about nutrition and physical activity, in addition to how they behave relative to their preferences/consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables, soda, fast foods, and school food. The survey will also explore family health habits and the impact of social support from families and friends.

Learning Areas:

Administer health education strategies, interventions and programs
Implementation of health education strategies, interventions and programs
Planning of health education strategies, interventions, and programs

Learning Objectives:
Describe the self-reported, primary health habits of public school students, grades 4-8, focusing on an inner-city neighborhood of New Orleans. Baseline data will be presented. Analyze baseline findings of physical activity and dietary habits of public school students, grades 4-8, and how those are correlated with school environment and curriculum, family values and attitudes, and social support from family and friends to practice healthy behaviors.
