Health and Nutrition Literacy: Milestones, Metrics and Moving Toward the Future

Tuesday, November 5, 2013: 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Oral
Poor health and nutrition literacy skills have far reaching effects on the health and well-being of the public. Communicating health messages in ways that people can understand is the single most important way to influence individuals to change poor health behavior, reduce morbidity and mortality, and improve their health. Although it has grown rapidly, the fields of health and nutrition literacy are still relatively new and discussions are ongoing about the construct and its measurement. Panelists will provide an overview of strategies that have been used to assess and intervene on health and nutrition literacy skills among the nation’s most vulnerable populations. Participants will present data from their research and engage the audience in a discussion about how these strategies can be used to improve the delivery of health care information in primary care settings as well as the wider community. This session is both timely and significant because as the field of health literacy matures, public health professionals must continue to seek opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills in order to enhance research and provide more effective service to the public.
Session Objectives: 1. Describe different strategies used in health and nutrition literacy interventions. 2. Examine metrics used to assess health and nutrition literacy. 3. Identify best practices for research and evaluation of health and nutrition literacy in clinical and community settings.
