Community Health and Technology: Systems of Corporate Control and Implications for the People’s Health

The session provides a systems approach to the availability and accessibility of health- and health care- related technologies in the community, with a focus on the corporate controls of such technology and their interactions as a profit-making system. The presentations include a general overview, followed by studies of control in two specific fields, i.e., medical prescriptions, and promotion of alcohol beverages in Africa.
Session Objectives: Describe the system of corporate control over health related technologies in the community.
Explain how the corporate control system promotes unhealthy processes with specific examples.
Discuss approaches to educate and organize the public to overcome such unhealthy processes.
