Healthy “Rural” People: How APHA’s State Affiliates Can Get Involved

This session will begin by sharing the results of the Rural Healthy People 2020 survey, the top 10 health focus areas for rural, and how those differed by census region. Additionally it will move into a discussion of how the project can be of use to state affiliates with regard to accreditation related rural public health workforce training. Finally, some promising practices for populations within rural areas, including focused groups such as veterans will be presented. As the percent of rural Americans shrink, so too does their political power. By channeling our efforts into those areas of greatest concern, by using the most promising interventions, and by employing common metrics not only can we improve the health of rural Americans, we can demonstrate the capacity of our communities and catch the positive attention of our elected officials.

Session Objectives: Describe the Rural Healthy People 2020 Project. Summarize the role of the state APHA affiliate in at least one of the community projects.
