Clinical health care training in rural and highly rural areas, the VA Maine Experience

Rural and highly rural areas are frequently at a disadvantage when recruiting health care professionals, which is magnified by the difficulty in providing clinical education in those areas. We will discuss VA Maine's experience in the provision of such clinical education including approaches to accreditation, recruitment of trainees, and recruitment/retention of faculty.

Describe the challenges in the provision of clinical training in rural and highly rural areas. Identify potential mechanisms for overcoming barriers to provision of that education. Assess the results of transitioning clinical education to rural and highly rural areas.
