Seeking Best Practices: A Conceptual Framework for Planning and Improving Evidence-Based Practices

Wednesday, November 6, 2013: 8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
Oral
Decision makers look for evidence-based practices to support and achieve public health goals. Efforts to improve public health practice can be hampered when information on the quality of evidence for a practice is limited or unknown. How can we encourage ongoing development, refinement, and evaluation of practices to build the evidence base? The Office for State Tribal Local and Territorial Support at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention convened an agency-wide workgroup at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2010 to focus on this issue. The workgroup was comprised of 33 representatives with varying backgrounds (science, program, and policy) and topical expertise (e.g., chronic disease, infectious disease, injury prevention, and environmental health). The workgroup produced a conceptual framework based on literature review and expert opinion. This framework defines a continuum of practices that represent the ongoing application of knowledge about what is working to achieve desired health outcomes and impact in a given context. This session will be utilized to introduce and provide an overview of the conceptual framework; describe how this framework has been utilized, and invite discussion and feedback.
Session Objectives: ) Describe the conceptual framework; 2) Discuss how the framework has been utilized and 3) Discuss feedback and utility of the framework
