Since 2008 the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health has led HHS efforts to build foundations to guide practices for quality in the public health system that will translate into improvements in population health. National guidance provided to date include a definition and vision for public health quality, 9 aims that serve as characteristics of quality in public health (population-centered, equitable, proactive, vigilant, health promoting, risk reducing, transparent, effective, and efficient, 6 Priority Areas for Improvement of Quality in Public Health (population health metrics & IT, research, policy, systems thinking, sustainability and stewardship, education and workforce), and public health quality educational materials to educate and train the workforce. This session includes panelists that will present on projects undertaken by the Institute of Medicine, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and AHRQ that demonstrate the uses and value of the HHS public health quality concepts. The presentations will provide illustrations on how the public health quality concepts can be used to build linkages between healthcare and public health to advance improvements in population health, identify measures aligned with the characteristics of quality in public health, and how to build public health programs in public health and healthcare settings that align with the quality concepts.
