Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview: The purpose of this learning institute is to provide in-depth training on how to analyze cancer surveillance data by using advanced features of the statistical software SEER*Stat, a resource from the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (NCI SEER) Program. NCI SEER is an authoritative source of data providing information on cancer incidence, survival, prevalence, and multiple primary analyses in the United States. SEER data contain historical and current surveillance data on cancer patients in various local and national communities in the US. NCI SEER serves as a platform for studies in the US and globally, addressing emerging issues in the field of cancer and cancer-related care. NCI SEER coordinates and collaborates with a number of organizations, including the World Health Organization, that are involved in cancer surveillance and related disciplines. Activities include setting standards for data collection by cancer registries, providing training and educational materials for cancer registry professionals, leading workshops to provide advanced training in data collection and coding and collaborating in the analysis and reporting of cancer rates. This advanced SEER*Stat training is an expansion of the basic course and provides participants with the opportunity to have a thorough knowledge in SEER*Stat by learning to calculate trend analysis, prevalence, survival, and multiple-primary standardized incidence ratio statistics. The training will also include an introduction to the Joinpoint software for the analysis of trends using joinpoint models. Researchers, clinicians, public health officials, legislators, policymakers, community groups, and the public can use these data to examine individual cancer records and to produce statistics for studying the impact of cancer on a population. SEER*Stat experts will be available to assist with in-class exercises and address any questions. Participants will be taught from a hands-on perspective working through a series of structured examples on individual PCs. Participants who have taken the Basic SEER*Stat course previously, may progress to the Day 2 Advanced course without repeating the basics.
Session Objectives: Identify the types of survival, limited-duration prevalence and multiple primary analysis available within the SEER*Stat software. Examine trends in rates using the SEER*Stat and Joinpoint software Calculate prevalence estimates and several types of survival estimates using the SEER*Stat software.
