Panel Discussion

In contrast to the vast demographic trends and projected further growth of Latinos as the largest racial/ethnic group in the United States, Latinos continue to be under-represented among public health researchers and leaders. Many Latino graduate students as well as faculty experience a host of institutional conditions and personal circumstances that may impede their scholarly progress and success at the highest levels. Panelists in this special session are all distinguished scholars in public health whose contributions have resulted in their election to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science. They will share lessons learned through trajectories of their scientific and professional development and the inspirations and aspirations that led to their work and success. The goal of this session is to provide Latino students, faculty members and those who mentor them with guidance on scientific and professional development.

Session Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1) Identify strategies for achieving a successful career as a scientist and public health leader, 2) Describe potential pitfalls, barriers and opportunities for Latino public health researchers, and 3) Discuss approaches for enhancing mentorship and engagement of Latino scholars in public health.
