This personal journey of a life career in American academics over decades of change is discussed. What is more essential-passion, opportunism, or commitment - for establishing a career? How do you bring your best to the table to build a career, and what do you avoid? How do you get value-added for your personal experiences? Is it better to be a specialist or a generalist for research success? If I was starting today what would I do differently?
