Global Advocacy Issues for Women and Children

Of the 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the only three that won't be achieved by 2015 are those related to MCH—MDGs 3) promote gender equality and empower women; 4) reduce child mortality; and 5) improve maternal health. Child well-being and survival are directly related to the health of mothers. This talk will address the reasons for lack of progress, promising new approaches and the importance of advocacy for global equity in MCH.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: Trained as a medical sociologist, I have devoted my professional work to improving maternal and child health through developing partnerships with many community programs including international work with the Universities of Peradenyia (Sri Lanka), Antwerp (Belgium), Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica as well the Haitian Health Foundation, International Health Central American Institute, Costa Rica), and BOCED (Buguruka Orphan and Community Economic Development Tanzania).
