Happiness as a Birthright: Promoting social and emotional well-being of children

This talk will review research linking early environment to childhood social and emotional well-being and then to health across the life span. It will review current US initiatives aimed at promoting well-being in early childhood, through home visiting, medical home enhancement, parent group models, and other modalities. The talk will focus on underlying tensions in this area, particularly the tension between strength based theory and approaches that aim to “teach” parenting to low income women and women of color.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I direct MCH programs for the Boston Public Health Commission. In that capacity, I serve as PI for 2 major early childhood mental health grants. Prior to my current role, I held a faculty position in MCH at Boston University and served as state children with special health needs director for 13 years.
