Record linkage for epidemiologic research: New opportunities and new challenges
Federally sponsored health surveys are a critical source of information on public health in the United States. Linking individual survey records to administrative records and other sources provides a powerful and efficient means to augment information on national health surveys and increase their analytic potential for epidemiologic research. Recently the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has expanded its data linkage program for its population-based surveys, such as the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES), allowing for epidemiologic research that can advance our understanding of the multiple factors influencing population morbidity, disability, and mortality. Concurrent with this expansion is the development of new data access procedures designed to ensure participant confidentiality which provide new challenges for investigators who seek to utilize these important resources. This session will describe the new record linkage activities of NCHS, including methodological and data access procedures for users, and present exemplary analytical projects that demonstrate the broad range of epidemiologic research that is possible with the newly linked NCHS data.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, attendees will: 1) have knowledge of NCHS’s data linkage activities, including linking methodology, and will be able to describe the new data sources; 2) will understand the broad array of research that can be conducted with NCHS linked data files and be able to apply it to their own interests; 3) be able to evaluate the data access procedures for the restricted linked data using the NCHS Research Data Center (RDC).
