Everything Your Mother Told You Not to Talk About at the Dinner Table: Race, Gender and Religious Discrimination as Human Rights Issues
An overview of the major international human rights treaties related to race and gender will be presented as well as the lack of a treaty addressing religious discrimination. Special attention will be paid to the health provisions of each of these treaties. Panelists will discuss the vulnerabilities created by race, religion and gender and how these vulnerabilities impact the provision of health goods and services as well as health outcomes. The role of public health professionals in addressing issues across the public/private debate such as intimate partner violence will be examined. Examples such as the Tuskegee Study conducted by the US Public Health Service will illustrate the potential risks and responsibilities for public health professionals in the provision of non-discriminatory treatment of the public.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this session participants will be able to: 1. identify the major international human rights declarations and treaties related to race, gender and religion 2. describe how health interacts with discrimination based on race, gender and religion
