Health and human rights: Gender as the entry point for addressing discrimination

Laura Ferguson, Department of Population and International Health, Harvard School of Public Health, 665 Huntington Avenue, 1-1202, Boston, MA 02115, 617-432-4313, lferguso@hsph.harvard.edu

This presentation will provide an overview of the intricate inter-relationship between health, gender and human rights. What gender-related characteristics make certain people more vulnerable to ill-health than others? And how can human rights be used to address this as well as other forms of discrimination? This will be examined within the context of HIV, both in terms of vulnerability to infection as well as access to services once infected. A brief outline will be provided of ways in which rights can be used to address gender, race and religious concerns. Finally, focusing on the work of public health, a few steps will be put forward for how we, as health professionals, can incorporate attention to all of these issues into our work.
