| This session will feature analyses of surveys and cohort studies on child health and development and ways to enhance physician roles in child health promotion. New research findings suggest that infant and child health problems can be anticipated or mitigated by the primary care physician. For example, maternal postpartum distress and depression has links to behavior problems in children, even at later ages. Visits to the pediatrician present unique opportunities to provide guidance to parents about child safety at home and in vehicles, assess potential risks that can lead to child abuse and neglect, and promote childrearing practices that contribute to healthy development. | |||
| Learning Objectives: 1. Recognize the importance of maternal postnatal psychological distress and its impact on child development. 2. Understand the patterns of continuity in behavior problems from infant to early adult life in preterm low birth weight children. 3. Compare pediatricians' knowledge of child passenger safety (CPS to the current American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations regarding CPS. 4. Develop anticipatory guidance regarding child restraint in motor vehicles that can be incorporated into well child visits. 5. Understand the importance of the quality of care assessment in pediatric primary care. 6. Recognize the role of the general pediatrician in prevention of child abuse and neglect. 7. Describe Bright Futures Initiative and potential uses and users of materials developed. | |||
