Beth Zimmerman, MHS, Judith Gallagher, RN, EdM, MPA, Christopher Botsko, MA, Rebecca Ledsky, MBA, and Valerie Gwinner, MPP, MA. Health Systems Research, Inc., 1200 18th Street, N.W., Suite 700, Washington, DC 20036, 202-828-5100, bzimmerman@hsrnet.com

In 1990, the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) launched Bright Futures, a national initiative encompassing a vision, a mission, a set of expert guidelines, and a practical approach to providing quality health supervision for children from birth through adolescence. Developed through a unique partnership among child health experts, providers, parents, and advocates, Bright Futures offers a broadly applicable, interdisciplinary, and flexible model of health promotion and disease prevention—currently being adopted by the American Academy of Pediatrics as the basis for its child health supervision guidelines. This talk will present new findings from the national process evaluation of Bright Futures, covering more than a decade since the initiative was launched. Findings will describe experience pertaining to the initiative's five objectives in the areas of materials development, dissemination, training, partnerships, and evaluation development. Lessons learned regarding the use of Bright Futures to foster a health promotion and disease prevention approach to children's health will be shared, along with practical examples of how Bright Futures has been used within clinical practice, public health programs, education and training, public policy, with families, and in communities.
