Integrating Tobacco Cessation in your Practice
Smoking accounts for one out of every five deaths in the United States. It is the most important modifiable cause of premature death, responsible annually for an estimated 5 million years of potential life lost. Although smoking has declined in the past three decades, 25% of adults in the U.S. continue to smoke. Health care providers have both the opportunity and professional obligation to modify smoking behavior and address nicotine dependency in their patients.
Learning Objectives: 1 Identify programs available for use in tobacco cessation. 2 Describe trends and issues regarding smoking cessation. 3 Explain current guidelines on smoking cessation intervention.
