The purpose of this presentation is to describe the development of the curriculum for the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and its alignment with the competencies for the public health workforce. In the presentation, the similarities between the DNP competencies for all advanced practice nurses and the competencies for the public health workforce will be analyzed. Then the place of advanced practice public health nursing within the context of the DNP will be specified. The DNP has potential to change the nursing workforce to a more population-based, systems-oriented practice. In addition, advanced practice public health nurse specialists will be prepared at the doctoral level with more developed skills in evidence-based practice, implementing health policy and innovative leadership. Issues in implementing this curriculum change in one School of Nursing will be elaborated.
