Abstract #104486

Estelle Schneider, MS PT, Department of Health Education/Masters in Public Health, San Francisco State University, 1600 Holloway Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94132, 415 665 1581, estelles@sfsu.edu

Regular physical activity can prevent or mitigate the effects of cardiovascular and other chronic diseases. Data indicate both a higher prevalence of physical inactivity for ethnic, low-income and older populations than in the overall population, as well as a higher risk for chronic disease. Yet there few community-based physical activity programs that target older low-income minority persons. There is a lack of literature on psychosocial cultural constructs and barriers to exercise for older low-income Latinos. The purpose of this study is to assess the attitudes, habits, cultural influences and obstacles to physical activity of Latinos age fifty and over in San Mateo County. Results of this study provide specific information to contribute toward developing appropriate public health interventions to decrease chronic disease in this population. The study utilized a mixed methods approach for data collection. A survey was developed with input from researchers and from a community-based organization that addresses health issues in the Latino community. Respondents were recruited through flyers posted at senior centers and community organizations. In addition, two focus groups were conducted a senior center. Results were shared with community groups who collaborated with the study.
