Student Papers on Birth Outcomes for Infants and Women
This session showcases papers submitted by students that deal with issues related to birth outcomes for both infants and women. Topics covered include: 1) racial, ethnic, social, and environmental factors related to low birthweight, 2) promoting healthy birth outcomes, 3) birth defects surveillance systems, and 4) maternal morbidity and mortality. This student session was initiated by the Maternal and Child Health Section to promote academic contributions and achievement in maternal and child health among graduate students. See individual abstracts for the presenting author’s disclosure statement.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participants will be able to: 1. Discuss risk factors associated with low-birth weight including maternal work related stress, and residential segregation by race and ethnicity. 2. Discuss ways of promoting healthy pregnancy outcomes among Arabic women and women with factor V Leiden. 3. Construct a template for creating a birth defects surveillance system training program for hospital staff. 4. Identify possible intervention strategies to reduce preventable deaths and near-miss morbidities through multidisciplinary focused education about seriously ill pregnant women. 5. Describe the relationship between acculturation and postpartum depression for Latinas.
