| The measured prevalence of autism is rising dramatically, which has lead to growing federal and public interest. However, the current state of knowledge about autism services and how those services are delivered is rudimentary, at best. This situation leaves healthcare practitioners and families of individuals with autism at a loss for knowing what services are useful, whether they are available locally, and where to obtain them. The bulk of autism-related services work has focused on describing one model of treatment or intervention without describing the auxiliary or complementary services that families are receiving in conjunction with the highlighted model. Critical services provided by non-professionals and the role of specialists are often overlooked. This session brings a services research perspective to understanding the organization, delivery, and use of services for autism through four presentations. | |||
| Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to describe: (1) current practice patterns among pediatricians and special educators who provide services to children with autism; (2) important barriers to care for children with autism and their families; and (3) patterns of medical, educational and ancillary service use by families with a child with autism. | |||
