Breastfeeding and Infant Nutrition: Evidence-based Clinical Care, Innovative Programs, Policy Implementation, and Research
During this session, two presenters will focus on breastfeeding among mothers experiencing challenging circumstances in their lives, i.e., women giving birth in Manhattan in the months following 9-11-2001 and Baltimore women experiencing depressive symptoms during the postpartum period. The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) in the U.S. and Quebec will be the focus of two additional presentations. The first of these presenters, will report on a national survey of U.S. baby friendly hospitals with respect to their breastfeeding rates and barriers to becoming baby friendly. The second presenter will discuss the development and use of a scoring system designed to measure the level of implementation of BFHI steps in hospitals in one region of Quebec. The final presenter will discuss the evaluation of a social marketing breastfeeding promotion program implemented in offices of primary care providers serving primarily low income pregnant Latinas in two regions of California.
Learning Objectives: 1. Describe how implementation of Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BHFI) was evaluated by a national survey of BHFI hospitals in the U.S. and by development and use of a scoring system of BHFI steps in one region of Quebec. 2. Describe rates of breastfeeding (any and exclusive) in the first 5.5 postpartum months among mothers who gave birth in Manhattan in late 2001 and the first six months of 2002. 3. Discuss the relationship between depressive systems and infant feeding patterns in Baltimore and the possible meanings of the findings. 4. Discuss the impact of a breastfeeding social marketing program implemented in the offices of primary care providers serving low income pregnant Latinas in two counties in California.
