The National Public Health Leadership Institute (PHLI), a year long leadership development program designed for teams of 2-4 senior public health leaders and funded by CDC, is using the United Health Report as part of its curriculum. Leadership is viewed by PHLI as involving an iterative cycle of action, reflection, learning and improved action. Thus, use of a report card that emphasizes action for health, “A Call to Action for People and their Communities. America’s Health: State Health Rankings,” is a natural tool for public health leadership development.
One distance learning event and a follow-up on-site learning activity have been used in PHLI to learn more about the United Health State Health Rankings and its potential leadership implications and opportunities. A conference call hosted by a guest expert involved in evaluating and modifying the rankings and a face-to-face discussion of the rankings by an interested subset of the class have discussed aspects of the report including suggested modifications in the report’s indicators that would make it more actionable. This presentation will review the methods used by PHLI to introduce and discuss the State Health Rankings and its leadership implications. The use of the report in several states, including leadership challenges and opportunities it has fostered, will be described with a special emphasis given to the experience in the state of Louisiana.
