Efforts in New York State to Protect Coverage for Low-Income Populations

Richard N. Gottfried, Chair, Health Committee, New York State Assembly, 250 Broadway, Suite 2232, New York, NY 10007, 212-312-1492, gottfrr@assembly.state.ny.us

Like many other states, New York has seen repeated efforts by the Governor and others to cut Medicaid and SCHIP, including scope of services, provider payment rates, and eligibility. Coalitions of concerned legislators, advocates for recipients, providers and health care worker unions have fought hard – with considerable success – to hold the line against these proposed cuts. The presentation will summarize the latest proposed cuts, alternatives offered, political strategies and efforts, and outcomes.
