The California Nutrition Network for Healthy, Active Families (Network) and one of its programs, the California 5 a Day Campaign, are working throughout California to build environments that support fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity among low-income adults and children. During this panel session, participants will learn how the Network and 5 a Day Campaign reach low-income Californians through schools, community youth organizations, churches, supermarkets, worksites, tribal organizations, county health departments, and community clinics. Effective advertising, public relations, and media advocacy strategies will be shared to demonstrate how the media can influence consumers’ mindsets about healthful eating and physical activity. Environmental and policy strategies, such as healthy vending machine policies, healthy fundraising in schools, increased access to supermarkets and farmers’ markets in low-income communities, and physical activity policies in worksites, will show how long-term, sustainable, community-level change has been accomplished in California.
