The eleven Regional Collaboratives of the California Nutrition Network (Network) and the California 5 a Day Campaigns' (5 a Day) (administered by the Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Section of the California Department of Health Services) encourage regional coalition building with the purpose of empowering funded programs, as well as non-funded partners, to build trust and maximize their efforts and strengths to work together on environmental, systems, and public policy change and resource development to address healthy eating, physical activity, and food security in their regions.
Each of the Regional Collaboratives—as part of a larger Partnership Development Infrastructure that comprises the Joint Steering Committee, an Executive Committee, and six Policy Action Teams—have taken steps to mutually achieve their objectives. A common issue and direction have been identified, incorporating strategic partners, local and statewide health advocacy organizations, and local media to help mobilize community support for change.
Using specific examples from the work of the Regional Collaboratives, this presentation will illustrate how effective public/private partnerships at a community level can—through consensus and a collective vision—accomplish grass roots environmental and policy change, while supporting both regional and statewide priorities and establishing local coalitions as the leaders in advocacy for healthy environments in their community.
