This presentation will summarize the work of individual local funders, as well as a coalition of local grantmakers and concerned constituencies in an ethnically diverse community to address locally identified priorities for improved nutrition and increased opportunities for physical activity. Strategies include the engagement of new partners, and moving the focus of prevention strategies from individual behavior to changing environments that detract from individuals’ efforts to make healthy life choices. The presentation will feature the following examples of local efforts to address obesity and diabetes prevention: · Increase access to low-cost fresh produce through working with cities to create new farmer’s markets in high need areas. · Increase opportunities for physical activity by create walkable communities. This effort is spearheaded by a local coalition that includes the City of Santa Ana and the local YMCA. · Reshape children’s environments by requiring local foundation grant recipients to provide “kid-friendly” environments that do not sell or promote sweetened beverages or junk foods. · Develop a continuum of care for childhood overweight and treatment. Local health care providers are working to identify food, fitness and obesity related resources in the community. Gaps in services are identified and filled. In addition, a seal of approval is provided to scientifically sound programs.
