Creative Succession Planning in Public Health

The Minnesota Department of Health Office of Public Health Practice (OPHP) is involved in a number of projects to support the growth and development of the public health workforce in Minnesota. One project in particular, The Pathways to Public Health project uses a social marketing approach to gain a greater understanding of the present workforce, the projected future workforce needs, and the current pathways used by people who enter a career in public health. Pathway’s is a workforce development succession planning process that identifies and describes the future workforce needs and the pipeline opportunities for future public health professionals. The Pathways project is supported by a steering committee with representatives from a range of community partners all dedicated to strengthening the public health workforce.

Primary outcomes of the Pathways project include a report with quantitative and qualitative descriptions of Minnesota’s state and local public health workforce today and projections of future needs in the public health workforce in Minnesota. A summary description of academic and career pathways generally followed by public health professionals – especially as they relate to specific indicators (major, discipline, age) Results of social marketing research with target populations to understand messages that influence decisions to get advanced education in public health.
