In June 2003, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began a comprehensive strategic planning effort that explored existing priorities and systems, adopted new goals and strategic directions, and aligned CDC's organziational structure and processes to pursue these strategies. To guide this effort, CDC adopted four key principles: (1) Outside-In approach; (2) Driven by data; (3) Full involvement of staff and external partners; (4) Organizational structure follows strategy. Cross agency workgroups were formed and new communication tools were implemented. Extensive data from both inside and outside the agency were collected to inform this process. During this session, the impetus, the guiding principles, the methodology, and the rationale for this process will be discussed.
