Public health managers face six major challenges in their attempts to lead their organizations in the pressure filled environments of public policy, societal demands, and professional mandates within the field of public health. These challenges form the foundation for the work they need to manage and perform. It is through the accomplishments of these challenges that a variety of successes can impact the organization in its attempts to deliver effective health outcomes, to create effective organizational performance, and to contribute to the broader public health profession. There are immediate and tangible benefits for staff and employees, as well as external clients, patients, and the general community. This paper presents these challenges and outlines how public health leaders need to understand what they are and the importance they represent. Each challenge offers opportunities for public health managers to develop approaches and strategies that specifically convert the challenges to organizational benefits. The paper also offers management competencies designed to equip public health managers with the skills, knowledge, and abilities to implement the conversion of these challenges. Participants will: 1. learn what these challenges are and how they apply to public health organizations; 2. gain critical information about the management of these challenges and how to translate them into organizational benefits; 3. acquire critical management competency sets to equip them in their pursuit of these successes.
