Three hundred and fourty five women were provided abortion services at FPAN's Itahari clinic in Sunsari district of Nepal, in the year 2003. To assess the quality of services provided, 35 women who received abortion services were interviewed. About 23% of women had no children; 89%had undergone abortion for the first time and 97% had consulted with their spouses before the procedure. The reasons for seeking abortion were: condom failure (9%); want no more children (14%); want to terminate unwanted pregnancy (57%); health problems (6%); and non-use of any FP methods (14%). Altough the average waiting time was two hours and there was adequate privacy (20%) and counseling (49%), all women reported that they were satisfied with the services provided, and 91% with the fee charged (US$12). About 97% of women mentioned that they would refer their friends, colleagues and relatives to FPAN's clinic. Twenty-six percent women reported postabortion complications. Only 54% of the clients were provided post abortion contraceptives.
