Social Justice, Data, Discrimination, and Social Inequalities in Health: The 1st Decade of The Spirit of 1848

Nancy Krieger, PhD, Dept of Society, Human Development and Health, Harvard School of Public Health, 677 Huntington Ave, Boston, MA 02115, 617-432-1571, nkrieger@hsph.harvard.edu

To recognize and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Spirit of 1848, this session will consider advances, setbacks, and challenges involving research on social inequalities in health. After a brief introduction describing the mission & past decade of activity of the Spirit of 1848, nine panelists will each briefly reflect on the current state of – and next steps needed to develop -- research on understanding & addressing social disparities in health in relation to: social class, racism, race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, environmental justice, urban health, contextual analysis, and issues of equity, justice, and theoretical frameworks for advancing work linking concerns with social justice & public health. The panelists will then be asked respond to a series of questions intended to spark spirited discussion about theories, hypotheses, constructs, methods, and data needed to move forward work & action on social disparities in health. These questions will be prepared by members of the Spirit of 1848 Politics of Public Health Data sub-committee, who also will prepare a resource guide listing books, articles, and websites relevant to the topics addressed. By raising critical questions and sharing critical resources, the session is intended to give all concerned new ideas & tools & energy to do the needed work.
