The initial paper in this session will focus on how varying definitions of breastfeeding used in research, data systems and policy documents contribute to contradictory results in research on breastfeeding outcomes, discrepancies in surveillance results, and problems with assessing program effectiveness. Other presenters will describe implementation of a policy based on the American Academy of Pediatrics 2001 recommendation for breastfeeding among women on methadone maintenance, assessment of public opinions about breastfeeding policies in various settings, the association of workplace characteristics with women's decision to breastfeed and work, patterns and correlates of breastfeeding in North Carolina based on PRAMS data, and breastfeeding as a risk modifier of secondary gastroenteritis in children with symptomatic mothers. The collection of papers accentuate the importance of defining breastfeeding using standard language in order to improve surveillance, research and policy. | |||
