The potential reach of the faith community as a catalyst for dialog with the public health community around HIV/AIDS has become increasingly evident, and as such, is a source that must be tapped. Historically, all information pertinent to the needs of the African American community was disseminated from the church pulpit. However, in the early years of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the faith community’s participation in education and prevention was very limited. Many churches resisted involvement in HIV/AIDS issues. For the past fourteen years The Balm in Gilead, Inc. has successfully focused its efforts on empowering and mobilizing the Black faith community around HIV/AIDS education and prevention. This presentation will: 1) discuss the rationale for faith community mobilization, 2) highlight successful models of faith community mobilization, 3) explore specific strategies for successful dialog with the faith community and 4) define essential steps for mobilizing the Black faith community.
