Children's Environmental Health Roundtable - Multidisciplinary Approaches to Community-Based Environmental Health
Nurses and other public health professionals have much common ground despite the fact that their common interests have not been intentionally explored. The roundtable session is intended to create the conditions for such exploration – to build a bridge between the environmental health section and the public health and occupational health nurse sections of APHA. At each table a facilitator will lead discussions related to public health and the environment. Topics include: health assessment for contaminated communities; technical assistance for contaminated communities; advocating for vulnerable populations; risk communication; pesticide poisoning: diagnosis, treatment and prevention; and agriculture and public health. Nurses and other health professionals can play a central role in assisting communities confronted by environmental challenges. They can help communities understand the dimensions of health risks of these issues as well as serve as catalysts for action.
Learning Objectives: 1. Identify areas of common concern and interest that exist among the environment health section and the public health and occupational health nurse sections of APHA. 2. Define roles for nurses and other public health practitioners in the environmental arena. 3. Compare and contrast the practice of various environmental health professionals related to a specific environmental health issue.
