Public health science and programs have focused on specific conditions usually identified by diagnostic codes from the W.H.O.'s International Classification of Diseases (ICD). A new member of the WHO family has been approved--the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health. This new system includes a conceptual framework, classification scheme, and coding system for addressing functional status. For the first time there is a system which can allow the varied disciplines in public health to communicate with one language, and is the foundation from which science, program, and policy can be integrated. It is of particular importance in the area of child health and children with chronic conditions because it uses a functional rather than diagnostic model. Focus is as easily placed on environmental factors as on the individual child. This session will introduce the ICF, and provide examples of its utility in public health activities.
Learning Objectives: The participant in this session will be able to: 1. Identify the components of the newly-approved W.H.O. INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF FUNCTIONING, DISABILITY, AND HEALTH. 2. Identify uses of the classification for children. 3. Identify ways to apply the classification to integrate science, policy, and programs for children
